Abstract

Evidence suggests that the students' school achievement is related to learning motivation and to learning strategies employ. It is possible to classify motivation according to its regulation as a continuum. It may have inner or outer regulatory elements. Autonomous form of motivation requires the fulfillment of 3 basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. The objective of this project is to evaluate the quality of motivation to learn, the fulfillment of basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness and the students learning strategies in a public elementary school, located in the state of São Paulo which has a different pedagogical proposal, as well as to examine the relationship among these variables. The sample will be composed of 550 students from 3rd to 9th grade in this school. Students' data will be collected using two questionnaires with open questions about motivation and learning strategies and threes scales: a Learning Strategies Scale, a Motivation Scale and a Basic Psychological Needs Fulfillment Scale. Moreover, will also be conducted observations in the classroom and an interview with the principal of the school. We hope that this research can contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in this area, as well as to generate subsidies for the implementation of new pedagogical proposals in schools, that can promote more motivated, autonomous, self-regulated and strategic students.
