Abstract

This work plan being developed at the University of California at Irvine (UCI), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zachary Fisk, deals with the possibility of exploring new superconductors through ThB12 phase stabilization by substitution of Th ions by other ions smaller and compatible with Th. This possibility is evident from the analysis of the new superconductor of stoichiometry Th0.97Zr0.03B12 with critical temperature of 5.4 K, discovered by the student in the last visit to the of Prof. Z. Fisk laboratory at last October. The preliminary results presented in this plan strongly suggest that this work is promising regarding the possibility of a new family of superconductors materials. Evidently the plan presented here could not be entirely developed in Brazil, and the student internship of the UCI is crucial to the success of this project. Besides the development of new materials this stage would allow the completion of the student's education, because it will be in contact with important techniques that do not utilize here. This would allow the student to learn new techniques and bringing this expertise to Brazil, consolidating our group in this important area of knowledge. (AU)
