Abstract

Natural metabolic processes in the human organism leads to the formation of different volatile organic compounds, so that, in a pathological condition, different processes may occur in the cells, producing a different set of compounds. With respect to scientific research, internationally, volatile organic compounds, commonly known as VOCs, have been evaluated in biological samples in order to be associated with certain diseases, most currently with cancer, showing up as potential biomarkers of diseases. A promising trend for the study of these compounds is based on the selection of samples that can be obtained without subjecting the individual to invasive methods. This project is based on the need to develop an analytical methodology capable of analyzing VOCs in sweat samples from individuals with cancer, while being able to discern these from sweat samples of healthy individuals, in order to facilitate a rapid diagnostic method, not invasive, and that initially can complement the anatomic-pathologic, serum and imaging examinations. The sweat samples will be collected with appropriate adhesive device in patients with confirmed cancer and healthy volunteers (controls), and VOCs investigated through analysis employing gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC / MS).
