Abstract

The Billings Dam, located in the southeast of the metropolitan region of São Paulo, is renowned for being one of the largest dams in the state. In recent years, the water reservoir has been undergoing significant changes in their quality, caused mainly due to the reversal of the Pinheiros and Tietê Rivers to the Rio Grande Arm, as well as due to human occupation of the areas around. These facts result in an increase in the body of water and change in physical and chemical quality of the same, in the conservation area around pollution and biodiversity, as well as to increase the eutrophication process. Eutrophication occurs naturally, however due to human actions this process has increased significantly. This phenomenon comes from the increase in the level of nutrients like carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the water. One of the compartments used for the study of a wetland are sediment, they concentrate biological, physical and chemical aspects that interfere with the metabolism of the ecosystem and contribute to the understanding of historical processes. The objective of this scientific research is to characterize chemical and granulometrically, sediments of a natural wetland Billings Dam in order to contribute to the study of the influence of load on the Affluent Polluting Emissions of CH4 and CO2.
