Abstract

Introduction: Dental treatment with thin ceramics has shown high survival rates when applied in anterior dentition. This has motivated its use in the posterior dentition. However, the literature is unclear about the influence of the operator profile in the survival rates for both conditions, the anterior dentition already established data and the posterior dentition based on trend of minimal reduction of the tooth structure. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical performance of minimally invasive ceramics restorations over posterior and anterior dentition during 1 year after completion of treatment and correlate the survival rates with the profile of the operator in a blind, prospective, and longitudinal clinical study. Materials and methods: 16 dentists with different levels of experience will be selected to perform restorative procedures with fixed prosthesis over teeth. The clinical and educational profile of each one will be recorded in spreadsheets. Teeth will be restored with ceramic (E-Max, Ivoclar Vivadent) based on two different settings as follow. Using the concept of split-mouth design, each dental reduction will be performed according to classical concepts or minimally invasive dental reduction (thicker up to 0.5 mm). 10 elements per professional at least will be performed. The cases will be immediately evaluated in different times (t) after cementation (t0 - baseline), 30 days after cementation (t1), 180 days after cementation (t2) and 1 year after cementation (t3). Longitudinal clinical analysis of the restorations will be based on judging criteria proposed by the USPHS (United States Public Health Service) with modifications, such as patient satisfaction with the color and anatomical profile of the restoration, comfort when chewing, flossing comfort, sensitivity, fractures, cracks, marginal adaptation, releases, and secondary caries. Based on the occurrence of fractures or chipping of the restoration, the impression will be performed to obtain a model in epoxy resin for fractographic analysis after obtaining the images from scanning electron microscope. Results: All data obtained from different times will be grouped into spreadsheets and charts in order to correlate the survival rate with the professional profile and expertise. The normality will be tested to adjust the statistical test, being originally planned the use of Kaplan-Meier test. (AU)
