Abstract

Among the kinds of pain that affect people throughout their lives, muscle pain, specially the one induced by sustained isometric contraction, is one of the most prevalent kinds of pain and has an important socio-economic impact. However, despite their clinical relevance, the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of muscle pain induced by sustained isometric contraction are unknown. We have recently developed a new model of muscle hyperalgesia induced by sustained isometric contraction and we have demonstrated that this hyperalgesic response is mediated by the inflammatory mediator prostaglandins. Considering that muscle injury is related to the increased concentration of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the aim of this study is to verify whether the sustained isometric contraction of the gastrocnemius of rats induces increase in concentration of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase. Also, it will be analyzed whether there is a positive correlation between the intensity of muscle hyperalgesia and concentration of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase.
