Abstract The present investigation looks for the development of caipira music, recorded in the first decades in 20th century, and its role in the process of framing the paulista identity and a new Brazilian urban culture. The aim is to comprise a trail, since its country-side and suburban roots until electronic recordings, taking away pressupositions developed by its contemporary artists and historiography. The research wants to read the relations between caipira music and the enormous market of musical and cultural entertainment. Thus, it's necessary to penetrate carefully on how much are those artists still listened from media registers and oral tellings, so the impact can be estimated. This is an investigation about the shape of caipira music sounds, its role in the new emergent urban culture environment and pressures faced by them between the notions of tradition and modernity.
