Abstract

This project aims to investigate the existence of asymmetric power relations between men and women in different countries, to be undertaken by analyzing the reservations made to the UN´s Convention for Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1979). First, it will be produced a quantitative study to identify how many and which are the countries with reserves, and which clauses more often rejected by the States-Parties. Then, there will be a qualitative analysis of reservations made to article 16, which deals with the rights of women related to marriage and family, as this is the most refused clause, comparing the reasons given by countries which have made this reservation and trying to find out if or not there are similarities in these fundamentals. Finally, the text of the Convention itself will be critically analyzed, with the aim to check the adequacy of this document as a tool to promote egalitarian relationships between men and women. (AU)
