Abstract

To investigate various coupling processes ubiquitous in the equatorial and low latitude upper atmosphere (~90-500 km) with special emphasis on the forcing from lower atmosphere. The specific problems are:The study on the effects of waves and tides in modulating the ionospheric variability through the vertical coupling. This will primarily examine the role of neutral dynamical forcing of lower atmospheric origin in context of well-known electrodynamic phenomena like the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) and Equatorial Spread-F (ESF) using combined optical and radio measurements.Understanding the High latitude-low latitude coupling during geomagnetically quiet times in view of the dramatic meteorological phenomena called the Stratospheric Sudden Warming (SSW). This will mainly investigate the day and night time response of equatorial/low latitude upper atmosphere during both southern and northern SSW events using combined optical, radio and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data sets.The study of generation, evolution and variability of F3 layer in the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere due to the forcing from below. In particular, the modulation in the occurrence pattern of this layer with the phase of long period lower atmospheric oscillations in addition to its short term variability due to the Gravity/Planetary waves and tides, if any will be addressed.
