Abstract

The techniques Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has established as instrumental techniques with attractive analytical capacity considering the multielement features, versatility, simplicity of the operating structure and reduction of the sample preparation step. These techniques are appropriated for the analysis of different samples, including the determination of toxic components in cosmetics. The cosmetic is considered any substance intended to be placed in contact with the various external parts of the human body (epidermis, hair, nails and lips), or with the teeth and mucous membranes of the oral cavity with a view exclusively or mainly to clearing them, perfuming them, changing their appearance, correcting body odors and protecting them. The cosmetic products that are worth mentioning are sunscreens that are used daily by millions of consumers, and are usually applied directly to human skin, which may be exposed to certain elements that may cause local effects on human skin such as irritation, sensitization, allergy or photoreactions. Thus, the goal this project is to determine toxic elements (Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb) in sunscreen samples (from different countries and protection factor) employing LA-ICP-MS and LIBS. In addition, strategies will be employed to eliminate or reduce the sample preparation and chemometric tools will be employed in the proposition of classification and calibration models to data analysis.
