Abstract

The growing demand for improved quality of service increases the importance of network automation, mainly when the network is affected by continuous short circuit events that may produce long duration interruptions (LDIs) on customers. In order to reduce these interruptions, utilities have been using remote-controlled switches. These allow improving the fault isolation and reconfiguration time and therefore increasing the system quality of service. However, electric utilities have no or poor criteria for placement of automatic switches. These may not bring an optimal solution to the problem. This project proposes a methodology for minimizing the financial losses related to process trip (FPT) which are caused by short circuits events. The FPT can be reduced installing a minimum amount of switch devices at appropriate locations for automatic load transfer in distribution systems. The problem of switch allocation is formulated as multi-objective nonlinear constrained mixed integer programming model subject to a set of economical and physical constraints. A genetic algorithm, that analyzes different alternatives of installation, is proposed to find local solutions near the global optimum solution. The fitness function, proposed in this project, aims to consider two important aspects: i.- the collective reliability indexes (SAIDI, SAIFI and ENS) which are associated with the number of consumers affected by LDIs, and ii.- the FPT which are associated with the number of continuous sensitive processes interrupted as a result of LDI. Thus, in case of a LDI, customers with more sensitive processes will have the priority over autorecovery actions. The multiobjective proposed aims to obtain alternatives, for placement of automatic switches, more adherent to the reality. (AU)
