Abstract

Study of the concept of courtly love idealized by Guillaume de Lorris, and its rejection by Jean de Meun, from the allegories and symbols in the Romance of the Rose - a poem that Guillaume began to write around 1225 and Jean completed around forty years later; topics covered and the approaches to them are different in each part of the poem as well as their amplitude. The entire poem has almost twenty-two thousand verses in some manuscripts. It is one the most influential medieval literary writings which influenced poets like Chaucer, Dante and Deschamps, and many discussions followed about their aesthetic and moral value among french humanists such as Christine de Pizan and Jean Gerson. The romance genre in French thirteenth-century literature is inseparable from the reality in which it flourished, therefore, the social conditions that makes possible the emergence of the Romance of the Rose will be analysed.
