Abstract

Comparative study of the pre-modernist and modernist Brazilian novel and the neorealist and post-Portuguese Revolution (April 25, 1974) novel. This comparative study will be based on the Agrarian Question; in this sense, we will try to understand, through the representation of characters in a given socio-temporal space, how industrial capitalism, then financial, changed the relations of production (relations between individuals in productive activity, resulting from forms of ownership of the means of production, at a given time and a given stage of development of the productive forces), in the field. So, the evolution of capitalism and the deepening of inequality, in the countryside and in the city, will have literature as a source of analysis. If the word is the material that allows literary creation, and that allows the form and existence of consciousness, it has to be understand as an ideological phenomenon, and therefore also literature. Moreover, some literary characters helped to build a collective imaginary (as was the case of Jeca Tatu, in Brazil) and a national identity. We consider, therefore, that in the Brazilian and Portuguese chosen novels, the characters themselves are a representation of the collective society. In this sense, we understand the social inequalities and the movements of society based on the study of production relations between the characters, a condition that determines their role in their contemporary society as well as their material conditions of existence.
