Abstract

Systemic arterial hypertension is pointed as one of the major risk factors to heart failure, considered one of the greatest public health problems, especially for the elderly population. Oxidative stress, sedentary lifestyle and low levels of training status have been identified as a relevant etiological factors. Thus, the purpose of this study is: evaluate the oxidative stress through quantification of oxidants and antioxidants substances in hypertensive and normotensive elderly and verify if the level of training status contributes to modulate this relationship. These study will includ 200 elderly over 60 years old divided according to the level of training status which will be evaluated in two forms: indirect VO2max and a general functional fitness through the battery of tests for elderly by American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Blood sample will be collected (12hs fasting) to the following analysis: glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, nitric oxide, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. Body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and blood pressure will be evaluated for characteristics subject data. Values will be described as mean and standard deviation and Pearson correlation coefficient will be performed to verify possible relationships between variables and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) to detect possible differences between groups.
