Abstract

The sheep beef market requires the control of diseases that cause economic losses, including mastitis. The mastitis is responsible for early disposition or the death of sheep and negatively influence on weight gain and survival of lambs. For the control of the diseases, diagnostic methods must be used for the correct identification of animals diseases. On mastitis, Somatic Cell Count (SCC) is commonly high, but it is short the informations about diagnostic features of CCS in sheep mastitis. The aim will be define the characteristics of CCS diagnostic in Santa Inês breed sheep, Dorper, Texel and Ile-de-France. Milk samples will be taken of all flock sheep in lactation located in São Carlos, São Paulo, at the beginning (until 21 days of lactation) and end of lactation (until 3 days after wean). Before the collection of samples, it will realized the California Mastitis Test (CMT) for early identification of subclinical mastitis cases. After to antisepsis of teats, milk samples will be collected in sterile tubes each mammary gland for microbiological exam. Samples of milk for the CCS will be collected in plastic tube with capacity for 60 mL with bronopol preservative and send to the reference laboratory located in Piracicaba, SP. It is expected that the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values for positive and negative results and the efficiency of CCS to be obtained, as well as different values of screening for the test according to the breed and in two different stages of lactation, can collaborate with technicians and producers for the future control of diseases.
