Abstract

Increased central arterial stiffness is an important determinant of cardiovascular disease risk and a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality, independently of other cardiovascular risk factors. The vascular stiffness measured by pulse wave velocity has been associated with several clinical conditions such as hypertension, metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes.Hypercholesterolemia is associated with endothelial dysfunction and structural changes in the vascular bed. It is Known that increased arterial stiffness is a cardiovascular risk factor and the results regarding the association between lipid profile with arterial stiffness phenotypes are conflicting, it becomes evident the need for further studies in general and specific populations, in order to establish the role of inappropriate lipid profile in vascular physiopathology. The glycated hemoglobin levels have been associated with cardiovascular risk and complications associated with diabetes. Recently, it has been demonstrated the association of glycated hemoglobin with phenotypes related to arterial stiffness in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. However, studies involving populations with different clinical conditions are still rare.Heritability is defined as the proportion of total phenotypic variability attributed to genetic effects. Regarding the pulse wave velocity, some studies with American and European populations demonstrated a moderate heritability, which would justify the genetic research. However, there is no such data for Brazilian populations. Therefore, the aim of the study is to estimate the heritability of pulse wave velocity and to associate the lipid profile and the glycemic control with arterial stiffness phenotype in a Brazilian rural population.
