Abstract

Information about the origin of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) series is crucial for our understanding of crust formation during the Archean. While there is general agreement that TTG suite rocks formed by partial melting of mafic crust, the depth, the composition of the source as well as the tectonic environment of formation are still a matter of debate. This study will address the generation of TTG melts by acquiring new trace element and whole rock data for Archean TTG series rocks as well as their possible protoliths from the São Francisco craton and compare these to findings from phase equilibria and trace element modeling. Observed and calculated results will then be matched to data from other cratons in order to test the proposed scenarios for Archean crust formation with the aim to find a general model explaining the formation of early crust considering the varying geochemical features of TTG suite rocks.
