Abstract

This project is a development of my Master's research project, titled (in English): "Political processes, symbolic struggles and the production of borders and places: an ethnography of the LGBT movement in Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil)", under the supervision of Professor Regina Facchini. The empirical objects are: the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) movement of Campinas, its relations with other social actors and the policies around homosexualities in the city. Its overall objective is to contribute to the understanding of social movements in Brazil by analyzing the LGBT movement of Campinas. In this research, ethnography is used as main methodological path for data production. Ethnography is complemented here by interviews and document analysis. For the internship research project the central methodology is review of literature, which is crucial to understand the data produced in fieldwork. The review of literature will be centered on two important questions that emerged during fieldwork: the importance and the role political parties play in the political processes studied and the relations of LGBT movement and urban space in Campinas.
