Predictors of total nephrectomy complications in patients with kidney stone disease

Abstract

The prevalence of kidney stone is approximately 8% of the population and its incidence is rising along the last two decades. Urolithiasis is a benign pathology but can cause loss of kidney function and death. Treatment aims to preserve renal function and eradication of renal stones, however, the total nephrectomy may be necessary in cases of urinary tract infection, pain or hematuria in a renal unit with relative small function. Goal: to determine the predictive factors of complications in patients with kidney stones disease submitted to total nephrectomy. Materials and methods: The records of patients submitted to total nephrectomy between January 2007 and May 2013 at a University Hospital with a large surgical volume will be revised. Inclusive criteria are patients who were over 18 years at the time of surgery and whose cause of surgery was kidney stone. Patients with clinical follow-up of less than 3 months will be excluded of the study. Predictors of complications will be caracterized by preoperative computadorized tomography, pathological feature and comorbidities evaluated by Charlson and ASA classification (American Society of Anesthesiologists). Complications will be evaluated according to the classification of Clavien. The renal function will be evaluated according to MDRD estimate glomerular filtration formula preoperatively, 3, 6, 12 months after surgery and at the last follow-up appointment. Stratification of renal function will be classified according to The National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF KDOQI) TM . The data will be analyzed with the aid of SPSS program. 10.0 The value of p < 0.05-tailed is considered significant.
