Abstract

The primary aim of this project is to develop a methodology for accurate survey of existing buildings to produce a 3D enriched model, which includes evaluating new information and communication technologies in Architecture, Engineering and Construction, and Facilities Management (AECFM) applications. In order to handle more efficiently projects of rehabilitating, restoring, preserving and maintenance of historical building, it is essential to rely on a 3D enriched model for the building. The research will be developed at the University of Southern California (USC), in the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Viterbi School of Engineering, United States. The Viterbi School of Engineering concentrates distinctive competences at the international level in the area of science, technology and innovation. The project is justified at the increasing use of model-based systems in contemporary design and construction, as well as the numerous methodological challenges that are not yet equated to the use of these technologies to the cultural building heritage. The main challenge of this project is to move forward in building an efficient, rapid and low operating cost methodology for the acquisition, processing, indexing, storage, search and retrieval accurate data on existing buildings. In addition, it is necessary to develop a semantically enriched digital model, that involves the geometrical aspects also as other kinds of atributes. (AU),
