Abstract

The period between the ninth and eleventh centuries was understood by historiography in the light of the terrors of the Year 1000, for a long time. According to several historians, as Jules Michelet and Georges Duby, supporters of the ideas of feudal anarchy, feudal mutation or feudal revolution, the post-Carolingian Empire would have suffered many crises because of mental, social and political sudden changes caused by the millennium and eschatological fears. Such feudal mutation, marked by the violence and the rise of local authorities, would be result of the decline of the Carolingian Empire and the consequent crisis and fragmentation of public power in the ninth to eleventh centuries. The explanations on the Year 1000 produced an anarchic representation of the Middle Ages, characterized by mental irrationality and lack of political forms, on the contrary of the modern state. In recent decades, however, many anti-mutationists historians have refuted some of the purposes on the Year 1000 crisis. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyse two universal chronicles, the Regino of Prüm's chronicle (written between 900-908), and the Rodulfus Glaber's historiae (composed between 1016-1047). We will to place such sources in historiographical debates on Year 1000 and to discuss whether the transformations in this period may be enough to characterize a political crisis, that led to the collapse of the public power, or whether such changes relate to a renewal of powers in the ninth to eleventh centuries.
