Stomach and colorectal Neoplasms: impact of social and cultural factors on health seeking aid

Abstract

Colorectal neoplasm in men is the third highest incidence of cancer in Brazil, followed by stomach neoplasms. Although they are known risk factors, prevention and diagnosis associated with these neoplasms, in Brazil many patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease, when emergency procedures are needed such as initial treatment, a situation that contributes to worsening the prognosis of this patient. This study aims to analyze the process of seeking medical care for patients with stomach and colorectal neoplasms, and the time between suspicion, the search for aid, the start of treatment and surgery; featuring the impairment of this situation in daily activities, family and financial situation; identifying bio-psychosocial factors that may interfere with the search for medical assistance. Therefore, we intend to do a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory study, with patients diagnosed with stomach and colorectal neoplasms, treated at a cancer hospital, referral in São Paulo. It is hoped that the results and conclusions of this study will promote the implementation of practices that improve diagnosis and treatment.
