Abstract

The environmental impacts from the construction materials are often considered only as resource consumption in assessment tools and environmental certification of buildings (Lemaire, 2006). Their life cycle is rarely considered in such methodologies. This observation can be explained by the limitations of the Environmental Product Declarations (Evironmental Product Declarations - EPDs), which provide environmental information that do not allow a direct comparison and choice of construction products.The implementation of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data of construction products into Building Information Modelling (BIM) platform would facilitate the insertion of LCA studies in the field of construction and building design process.Therefore the aim of this research is to propose an approach for the integration of LCA databases into BIM platform, in order to become possible to predict and assess the potential environmental impacts of construction and technological choices carried out during the building design phase.An investigative approach about the possibilities of such integration will be proposed and developed, especially in the field of collection and treatment of LCA inventory data and the development and adaptation of a software plug-in based on BIM platform.
