Abstract

In Brazil, the most common conserved forage for lactating cows in intensive systems is the corn silage, due its high nutritive value. However, in the ensilage process, when silage is not well made or mishandled at the silo opening stage, might undesirable microorganisms, as yeasts and molds, can grow up. In this way, this project will be elaborate for a better understanding of yeast role in corn silage and its effects in dairy cows performance. The project will be separated in two phases. In the first one, the yeasts from corn silage of commercial farms will be isolated and indentified by molecular methods, using PCR and sequencing and also it will be indentified by biochemical method (substrate utilization). The second phase of the project will have the inoculation of corn silage and Total Mixed Ration (TMR) with the most predominant yeast strain, found in the first phase. Two bag silos will be made, one control and another with the yeast inoculum. The silages will be offered to 32 lactating cows, randomized in eight 4x4 latin square, in a 2x2 factorial arrangement, and the treatments are: T1- control silage without inoculum in TMR; T2 - control silage with inoculum in TMR; T3 - inoculated silage without inoculum in TMR; T4 - inoculated silage with inoculums in TMR. In this phase, will be evaluated: chemical composition, microbial and fermentative profiles, aerobic stability of silages, and the performance of lactating dairy cows. The analytical statistics will be made using SAS's package and the difference between means will be made by Tukey-Kramer's test. (AU)
