Abstract

The purpose of this in vitro study is to evaluate the efficacy of three commercially available sensitivity relief dentifrices in the reduction or elimination of root dentin permeability before and after exposure to acid challenges. Thirty-nine third molars obtained from the local School of Dentistry Tooth Bank will be used. Their crowns will be sectioned above the cementoenamel junction, and the pulp tissue will be removed. The cervical root dentin of each tooth will be exposed with a high-speed bur (approximately 1 mm in depth of substance loss). From each root fragment, one specimen will be prepared. Specimens will be randomly assigned to three groups: Group I ? Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief, Group II - Sensodyne Repair and Protect, Group III- Oral B Pro-Saude Sensitive. Each specimen will be connected to a hydraulic pressure apparatus to measure root dentin permeability after the following sequential steps: I) conditioning with phosphoric acid to obtain the maximum permeability, II) treatment with dentifrices, III) acid challenges (exposure to orange juice). Data will be submitted to statistical analysis.
