Aiming at contributing with elements for a more complete comprehension about the intellectual and political performance of Antonio Candido (1918-), this research starts from the problem around the meaning of the references to the Dominican priest Louis-Joseph Lebret (1897-1966) within two of his texts, Parceiros do Rio Bonito (1954) and "O direito à literatura" (1988), for, with its analyses, proposing an interpretation about how it can be explained in each place that it appears and the way it articulates with the totality of the respective texts, as well as with the intellectual and political performance of the author mentioned above. The hypothesis we look for verifying is that, separated by more than thirty years and maintaining sense constancy, such references are not casual or merely sense of adequacy by Candido, but, on the other way around, they have a deeper meaning which is interested at being studied, possibly related to historical and social problems for what the author tried to respond. So, the research aims as well at discussing Candido as an interpreter of Brazil and situating his as a particular expression of an specific tradition of the Brazilian political and social thought, and we intend to do this looking for the way the a priori analytical which are subjacent, the ethics postulated and the political perspectives mobilized interact within his thought.
