Abstract

Alterations of natural surfaces by the urban built form lead to environmental heterogeneity and changes to the surface energy balance which highlights the importance of urban mapping to supervise and guide city planning and growth. Satellite images can be used to map the urban landscape, with its complexity of activities, flows and constituent materials. These satellite-based maps can offer significant support to planning and territorial management activities. High resolution satellite imagery and advanced techniques have been widely used to map land use and land cover types and detect the elements that make up the urban surface with great detail and accuracy. Among the recently developed classification methods, the object-based approach has been successfully adopted as a way to overcome the limitations of pixel-per-pixel classifiers by using topological and geometric information as part of the image classification process. During her internship at OSU the student will become familiarized with this technique and apply it to problems related to her master's research project - the analysis of urban surface properties that modify the atmosphere in the canopy layer in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo.
