Abstract

The electoral victory of Salvador Allende - the Popular Unity (UP) candidate - in the 1970 Presidential elections brought with it the need to build a "new culture" to a "new Chile", which has generated an intense debate among his supporters. Having in sight the prospect of influencing the formulation of official cultural policies, many social scientists, writers, artists and activists of the political parties that formed the ruling coalition sought to postulate its foundations, revealing heterogeneous and even contradictory positions in the discussions about the role the "cultural workers" should assume in the Chilean way to socialism. Having this scenario as a reference, this PhD project aims to examine how the musicians identified with the Chilean New Song Movement tried to answer, in their discourses published in the press and in their musical production, the challenge of building a "new culture". Moreover, we will check the extent to which the "answers" that were elaborated by the musicians corresponded to governmental purposes and if they have in fact influenced the cultural policies debated and carried out by UP between 1970 and 1973. From then on, we seek to understand which elements contributed to the identification of the movement with the new values proposed by the politicians, allowing this production to become, in the view of the public, the main cultural reference of Allende's government in national and international level - image that prevails to the present.
