Abstract

The analysis of recent literature points to high rates of burnout in medical residents, which is associated with impairments for the physicians and their clientele. There is a need for studies that address conditions of protection as well longitudinal studies. This study will target these gaps in the literature, with the following objectives: a) To examine the predictive effect of personality traits, social skills and indicators of mental health problems concerning to anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse on burnout in medical residents; b) To compare the characteristics related to sociodemographic variables, indicators of burnout, personality, social skills and mental health problems related to anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse presented by resident physicians at the beginning and end of the residency program; c) To identify for the outcome related to burnout, the associations between the sociodemographic, work-related and personality variables, social skills resources and indicators of mental health problems related to anxiety , depression and alcohol abuse. The study will be developed by means of two different designs. The cross-sectional design will use a sample of 270 medical residents from the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto - USP, evaluated in 2012 and 2013, and the Longitudinal design will use a convenience sample of 100 medical residents from that hospital, in two periods, the first assessment will be at the beginning of the residency, and the second assessment will be at the end of the residency program. Standardized self-report instruments will be used. The instruments will be encoded according to technical standards; the data will be analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. For the longitudinal design, paired t test will be used for the comparison of the two assessments. Values of p<0,05 will be considered statistically significant in all tests. It is intended that this study contributes to the systematization of data that can assist in proposing prevent measures regarding mental health of medical residents. (AU)
