Abstract

Metabolic exchanges between an organism and the environment, including interactions with neighboring organisms, are very important to the development processes of the body. Such interactions have been studied for long time, however, by methods that not provide spatial and temporal analyses of secondary metabolites in biological samples. In this context, the imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) emerges as a powerful tool that allows the observation of the effects of multiple microbial signals in an interspecies interaction, enabling an advanced understanding of the chemical signaling process. Thus, in this project, IMS will be applied in the investigation of metabolic exchanges that occur during interactions between fungal pathogens of the cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) and fungal endophyte Clonostachys rosea, potential biocontrol agent, and in interactions between endophytic bacteria from citrus plant and the phytopathogenic bacteria Xylella fastidiosa, causal agent of citrus-variegated chlorosis (CVC) that occur in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.) and other commercial citrus. Given that these pathogens are responsible for significant economic losses in Brazilian cocoa plantations and citriculture, the results obtained in this proposal will be of paramount importance for understanding of the defense mechanisms of these microorganisms, and may provide grants to combat the diseases caused by phytopathogens.
