Abstract

The main hydrographic basin that contributes to the Cananéia-Iguape-Peruíbe estuarine complex - CIP (represented by the Ribeira de Iguape River basin - RIR) was place of intense activity of mining and metallurgy of lead (Pb) in the past. Although mining activities have been closed, they still influence the RIR and CIP, as slags and tailing piles are deposited on the river banks and are a source of metals to the system. Environmental assessments have focused on determining the concentrations of Pb in water, sediments and native biota, but there is little information on the effects of Pb to native organisms. Biomonitors can be used to evaluate environmental contamination, but require the understanding of the contaminants uptake mechanisms by the organisms, including the main pathways and the internal regulatory mechanisms of contaminants. Blue crabs of the genus Callinectes, commonly found in estuarine regions of São Paulo, have been used as environmental biomonitors. This study aims to evaluate the effects of Pb exposure through feeding and respiration in the blue crab Callinectes danae from the CIP region. Blue crabs will be collected in the South portion of CIP, and will be used in experiments of exposure to Pb by aqueous and feeding routes, for 7 and 15 days. Two Pb concentrations will be used (0.5 and 2.0 mg/Kg), with 4 treatments: control, aqueous exposure, feeding exposure, combined exposure. At the end of bioassays, tissues of 5 individuals per group will be removed and analyzed for contamination and biomarkers. Statistical and multivariate tools will be used to analyze the data. (AU)
