Abstract

This project aims to study the occurrence, in Italian, of a particular type of construction - the paratactic verbal constructions (henceforth, PVCs), which are formed through the junction of two inflected verbs, V1 and V2, as in (1): 1) Da quando era tornata dalla clinica sembrava guarita, prep quando Voltar-Pas.Ind.3sg. de a clínica Parecer-Pas.Ind.3sg. curada, era abbastanza normale, poi la notte di Natale Ser-Imperf.Ind.3sg. bastante normal, depois na noite de Natal ha preso e si è buttata Ter-Pres.Ind.3sg.AUX Pegar-Part. e refl. Ser-Pres.Ind.3sg.AUX Jogar-Part. giù dalle scalebaixo de a escada When [she] came back from the clinic, [she] looked healed, [she] was really normal, then in the Christmas evening, [she] took and threw herself downstairs. (Subcorpus: NARRAT/Section: NARRATRomanzi). The construction is schematic and the verbs that can fill the position V1 represent a closed class formed, mainly by andare (to go) and prendere (to take). The structural configuration of the PVCs impose a challenge of classification, since they represent structures with intermediate character between coordination and subordination. Once one associate to the romance languages only these two types of complex sentence types, we present a proposal of PVCs analysis that oppose this traditional perspective, defending its statute as being a construction formed by the process of verbal serialization. The PVCs analysis in Italian will consider syntactic, semantic-pragmatic, and morphosyntactic aspects, and will follow a theoretic-methodological perspective of Functional Linguistics (American approach), whose concept of continuity is fundamental for our analysis. Grammaticalization and Construction Grammar theories also constitute an essential basis for the understanding of PVCs, since we consider a hypothesis supported by Rodrigues (2011) that there is a continuum of grammaticalization of the PVCs through coordinate constructions; hence, the verbs cannot be studied independently: the constructions are the minimum syntactic level of analysis.
