Abstract

Feed efficiency is an extremely important production trait, however, despite its known moderate heritability, this trait has not being considered in genetic evaluation programs, because measurement is costly and occurs late in animal's life. Selection for more efficient animals may contribute to reductions in pasture area and pollutant production (methane and manure), despite allowing for increases in profitability of producers. Recent developments in molecular genetics, such as platforms for genotyping and genome sequencing, provide an opportunity to identify genes and pathways related to production traits such as feed efficiency. This study attempts to identify differentially expressed genes in animals genetically divergent for Residual Feed Intake (RFI), using RNA sequencing (RNAseq) to obtain information from genome wide expression profiles in muscle and liver tissues. This study will provide insights into the molecular mechanisms which underlie RFI. (AU)
