Abstract

Introduction: Florid osseous dysplasia (FloOD) is an uncommon fibro-osseous disease characterized by gradual substitution of normal bone by fibrous connective tissue and/or cementum-like masses. It affects more commonly middle-aged Black women, but can also affect Caucasians and Asians. Diagnosis is based on clinical and radiological characteristics and treatment is usually conservative, but is important to teach adequate oral hygiene protocols to the affected patients to avoid tooth loss and secondary infections. Objectives: This study intends to bring new and relevant information about the clinicopathological features of FloOD and to better characterize the disease profile in different ethnicities. Materials and methods: Two hundred cases of FloOD will be evaluated, with approximately 50 cases from each country, including Brazil, Guatemala, South Africa and United States of America. All cases will be assessed by experts from these countries and cases in disagreement or correlated with systemic and/or genetic diseases will be excluded. Panoramic radiographies will be evaluated through the ImageJ software 1.47v (NIH - USA) to define the extent of the disease, ratio of radiolucent/radiopaque images and the grade of opacity of the masses. Data from clinical (age, gender and ethnicity), radiographic and histopathologic (when available) features will be correlated and compared using the SPSS program. (AU)
