Abstract

The "swollen face" of ruminants is a periodontitis that affects young and adult animals when kept in pasture areas recently reformed. It is characterized as a purulent, necrotic, progressive process, with changes in the dentition ond tooth loss that result in damage to animal health and economic losses. In ruminants, the evidences suggest the involvement of primary periodontopathogenic anaerobic microflora in the pathogenesis of disease and unknown food factor, associated to soil management. Among the anaerobic bacteria of recognized importance in periodontitis are those of the genus Treponema, responsible for promoting tissue damage and increase the depth of the periodontal pockets. Belonging to the family of spirochetes, they are isolated from periodontal pockets of humans and other animals. In general, they are found in high numbers in deep sites, and rarely in healthy sites. The presence of these bacteria have been associated with increased risk of particular site developing gingivitis or periodontitis. Treponema denticola is found more often in patients with advanced periodontitis and in dogs T. denticola, T. vincentii, T. medium, T. socranskii, T. maltophilum, T. amylovorum and T. pectinovorum are identified in high number in animals with severe periodontitis. The present study aims to identify species of the genus Treponema spp. associated to sheep periodontitis lesions by polymerase chain reaction, using primers related to these bacteria.
