Abstract

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of State of Sao Paulo (UNESP - Presidente Prudente/SP/Brazil) developed a composite from the mixture of leather waste with natural rubber, which is already filed for patent. One possible application is the incorporation of this new material in products for the textile and footwear industries. However, as the composition of the leather waste has chromium, the question arises as to the biocompatibility of this new material and safe use for humans. Thus, the aim of this study is to conduct a study regarding the presence of chromium in this new material, defining the amount of chromium present as chromium found (trivalent and hexavalent) and evaluate the possible cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of the new composite, using as system - test two human cell lines. As results, expected - to meet the predominance of trivalent chromium in the structure of the composite and also that this does not have cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on the evaluated systems - tests. If the expected results are confirmed, it will be possible to apply this new composite to be used in the manufacture for the textile industry, which is always looking for new materials that meet the demands of a highly competitive market. It will also contribute to environmental quality and sustainable development, as it is creating the possibility of taking advantage of the leather waste, which is a major environmental problem.
