Abstract

During most of the nearly one hundred years of history, FC Barcelona has appropriated the Catalan identity, especially in the difficult years of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. After years of turmoil, the club experienced moments of glory in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, to the extent that FC Barcelona conquered titles inside and outside Spain, lost part of their identity. The club hired many foreign players. While FC Barcelona became known worldwide and hired players from different regions of the globe, there was some discomfort on the part of the Spanish players for the loss of space in the squad of FC Barcelona, such discomfort could be noticed in the newspapers, especially in Catalonia. This project proposes to study the tension between the national dimension, present in the readings that the Catalans make of FC Barcelona, and the universal dimension that can be characterized by the capitalist world market insertion of the ball. For this, two Spanish journals will be used, ABC and La Vanguardia, Barcelona and Madrid, respectively, between the years 1988 and 1999 will be used. (AU)
