Abstract

Poly (ethylene terephthalate), known by the acronym PET and commercially as DACRONÂ, is chemically classified as a thermoplastic polyester polymer. This material has been widely used in the textile industry, in the production of plastic bottles and in health, with applications in medicine, where it is used for vascular grafts and cardiovascular prostheses. Besides biocompatibility, this material exhibits high strength, gloss and transparency, which makes this the preferred thermoplastic many sectors. In view of the good mechanical and biological materials reported in the literature that performance, the objective of this study is to evaluate the properties of PET and polyethylene by means of four tests: scanning electron microscopic, roughness, compressive strength, hardness, and comparing the PET performance against polyethylene material already used in the manufacture of prosthetic components. To do so, shall be made 120 specimens for each material, 30 for each proposed test, the dimensions and shapes determined by the rules of each test. To obtain the results of the statistical processing will receive data in order to make the correlation between the properties of PET and polyethylene.
