Abstract

Several episodes have suggested the imminent risk of using water collected from brazilian natural sources for supply purposes. The main causes of water quality deterioration is the lack of control in livestock activities, the disorderly population growth and the precarious sanitation conditions in these places. Therefore, to reach potability standards, the water treatment become indispensable. In Brazil there are about 30 million people residing in rural localities and only 33.2% of households are connected to the water distribution network; therefore, the remainder is bound to use other forms of water supply. The use of alternative techniques has been the only solution for neglected isolated communities; however, the drinking water quality is still considered precarious. In this context, this research aims to: I) test the natural coagulant Nopalea cochenillifera; II) evaluate the performance of the sponge Luffa vegetable Cylindrica as an alternative disinfectant; and II) adapt the results to the reality of the Brazil isolated communities. The research will be developed in the Laboratory of Advanced Treatment and Reuse of Water - LATAR, at the Department of Hydraulics and Sanitation, School of Engineering of São Carlos, University of São Paulo - SHS / EESC / USP. The research will increase knowledge regarding the use of natural and alternative disinfectants, coagulants, with the aim to transfer the techniques tested to isolated communities in Brazil. Throughout the project several scientific articles will be published in journals and national and international conferences.
