Application of coagulation and slow filtration to reduction of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts by simulation with polystyrene microspheres

Abstract

A protozoan with a high degree of dangerousness and very common in the larger world existing outbreaks is Cryptosporidium spp. And once their oocysts present in drinking water can cause damage to human health and animal. As the chlorination does not guarantee complete inactivation of these organisms is necessary for water treatment plants have effective treatment systems, especially during coagulation and filtration. Thus, these organisms can be retained during these stages of treatment and thereby enabling better quality water for consumption. Moreover, we must find economically viable alternatives geared to people who lack sanitation infrastructure, so you can serve the main basic parameters of water quality. Alternatives such as filtration systems can be economically viable alternatives for obtaining materials for easy access. Also as a coagulating agent is possible to use natural coagulants can remove suspended particles and reduce the number of many organisms present in water. A natural coagulant used in water treatment in small communities is the seed from the tree Moringa oleifera. Some studies have shown that the use of surrogate of Cryptosporidium to assess the effectiveness of treatments have been used as an alternative to avoid the use of protozoa in research, and so many advantages are observed as the cost, since the analysis for these agencies are costly and have a reduced risk of contamination by these oocysts. Among these surrogates, polystyrene microspheres has been shown to be a favorable option for getting some characteristics similar to the oocyst. Given the importance of eliminating these protozoa in drinking water, this work will aim to employ a filtration system and natural coagulant from the seeds of Moringa oleifera for the removal of polystyrene microspheres. Thus it is expected that with coagulation and filtration system, the microspheres are retained in such treatment processes, and thus allows to consider the oocysts of Cryptosporidium. Thus, one may become a viable alternative technical and economical water treatment primarily designed to serve populations that have no conventional treatments. (AU)
