Abstract The slow sand filtration is a simple and efficient technology of treatment of water to rural and developing communities that lost their viability due to frequent worsening of water supply quality; the increase of amount of impurities in the water to be treated anticipates clogging of filters and reduces the operating time. This technology was recently improve by the use of non woven synthetic fabrics at top and bottom of sand bed, reducing costs and increasing the run filtration, without prejudice the treated water quality. The exclusive use of non woven synthetic fabrics as a filter media is an innovative alternative of slow filtration that's not yet explored by researchers and, therefore, the operating and design projects data are insufficient. In this context, the present project aims to evaluate the operation of a slow filter constituted by only non woven synthetic fabric in comparison with the conventional slow sand filter. Will be installed a system with slow filtration units of sand and of non woven fabric, to evaluate the development of schmutzdecke (biologic layer that are formed on the top of filter media), hydraulic parameters: head loss (run filtration) and filtration rates (3, 6 and 9 m/d); and physico-chemicals and bacteriological parameters of water influent and effluent at filtration units and water distributed along the thickness of non woven fabric filter with the purpose of publish data about the mechanism for removing of impurities in different depth of filter bed. The obtained results will be allowed verify the viability of filter media composed exclusively of non woven synthetic fabric as a alternative of slow filtration of water to supply small and rural communities. | |
