Abstract

The emergence of biotechnologies applied to equine semen, such as cooling and freezing procedures, represented a breakthrough for equine business, especially for allowing a better use of the ejaculate, thus optimizing the use of genetically superior animals. However, during these processes, seminal plasma is removed and also numerous antioxidant substances are eliminated, making sperm cells more susceptible to damages caused by the action of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). The incorporation of elements that perform this antioxidant function to cooling and freezing semen extenders is than necessary. Quercertin is considered a powerful antioxidant as it reduces the formation of the main ROS but its application on equine semen during the cryopreservation process is poorly referenced. Further studies are needed in order to determine if there is in fact a positive influence of its use in equine semen cooling and freezing protocols. (AU)
