Abstract

Friction Riveting (FricRiveting) is an innovative spot joining technique for polymer-metal hybrid structures which was developed and patented in 2007 by the research center of Helmhltz-Zentrum Geesthcht/HZG, in Germany. This technique has been study object of the cooperation between Prof. Dr. Leonardo Canto (UFSCar, Brazil) and Prof. Dr. Sergio Amancio (HZG , Germany). Previous works have shown good performance of polyether imide (PEI) and aluminum alloy 2024T3 joints , polycarbonate plate and AA2024T3 joints, composite of glass fiber reinforced polyetherimide (PEI-GF) and pure titanium grade 2, 3 and titanium alloy Ti6Al4V joints and short carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK-CF) and pure titanium grade3. The present work objects applying FricRiveting for the combination of pultruded composite of glass fiber reinforced thermoset polyester and metallic rivet of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. It is also scope of the work study the influence of the process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical performance of the joints, which were produced during the Internship of the student following the "one-factor-at-a-time" design of experiment. They will be characterized in terms of local and global mechanical performance by nano and micro hardness and lap shear test, respectively. Fractography analysis and the microstructure of the metallic rivet and the composite plate before testing will be done using scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to investigate possible phase transformations in the reivet and physic-chemical changes on the composite. Finally, decomposition and thermo-mechanical degradation of the thermosetting matrix due to the heat gnetarted during the joining process will be investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermal analysis such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). The correlation among process parameters of the FricRiveting, microstructure and the mechanical properties of the P-GF/Ti6Al4V joints is the aim of the project.
