Abstract

As a consequence of the progress in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the population growth and the increase of life expectancy, the number of patients surviving cancer will continue to rise in all countries. The literature registers various definitions for "survivorship" and "cancer survivorship", with a multidisciplinary approach to examine the phenomenon within its constructions, but without specifying the criteria that characterize the concepts. In order to clarify these concepts, thus contributing to the knowledge and the practice of oncologic nursing, this study has the objective: To analyze to concept of cancer survivorship in the health literature and by illness adults and aged. In the first step, we will perform the analysis of the concept proposed by Rodgers' method. This model is prepared in six steps, aiming at the analysis of the studies surveyed by inductive thematic analysis. For the second step, we will continue with the Medical Anthropology and narrative method for obtaining the meanings of cancer survivorship. The collected data will also be integrated by the inductive thematic analysis. The last step consists in a comparative analysis of theoretical and empirical findings. The concept of cancer survivorship will be characterized by attributes and consequences, based on the theoretical knowledge and the meanings given to cancer survivorship from the experiences of illness persons.
