Abstract

The central theme of this dissertation is the notion Conjunctio oppositorum, a term coined by Jerzy Grotowski to express the paradoxical intertwining between 'structure' and 'spontaneity' in the performing work. The dissertation is divided into three parts. Part I, called Conjunctio oppositorum, is a historical analysis and bibliographic review of the subject. Part II, the Paratheatre, is an analysis of the projects undertaken between 1970 and 1982 by the Laboratory Theatre - Polish group directed by Jerzy Grotowski. Part III, entitled Conjunctio oppositorum in the Paratheatre, parts I and II are linked through the analysis of the paradox structure- spontaneity in the parathetrical projects. The objective is to demonstrate how in the Paratheatre, in which apparently there was no structure, yet this dimension was still configured. (AU)
