Abstract

Syllidae Grube, 1850, is one of the largest polychaete families, currently comprising around 720 species, distributed in 70 genera. Despite being common in nearly all benthic marine samples, less abundantly at great depths, only recently the family began to be more thoroughly studied in Brazil, leading to a prominent volume of species descriptions in recent years, including both new occurrences for the country and species new to science. For accurate species descriptions, it is of great importance the study of material from related congeners from other localities, and preferably type material. However, comparisons are not rarely made exclusively based on the literature, due to difficulties in the exchange of material among institutions. So, whenever possible, the study of large amount of material from important natural history collections should rather be done in the facilities of these museums, instead of asking for heavy loans of material, what may involve several types of difficulties. In this context, the present project aims a grant to visit the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (Washinton, D.C., USA), to study important part of the syllid collection of that institution, comparing the specimens, preferably types, with Brazilian material, in order to provide more complete and accurate comparisons, in future descriptions of species from the Brazilian biota.
