Systematics, phylogeny and biogeography of ticks of the genus Amblyomma (Acari: Ixodidae) that occur in Brazil

Abstract

Together with the adult stage, the nymphal and larval stages of ticks of the genus Amblyomma are the most aggressive ticks for humans entering in areas inhabited by wild life and some domestic animals in Brazil. Thus, ticks of this genus are the largest medical importance, already under the major species that parasitize humans in this country, being incriminated in the transmission of Brazilian spotted fever and other rickettsial diseases to humans in the national territory. In the present study, the molecular phylogeny of the genus Amblyomma, based on systematic and biogeography of the Brazilian zoological collections, will be held for adults of the following 32 ticks species of this genus that occurring in Brazil: A. aureolatum, A. auricularium, A. brasiliense, A. cajennense, A. calcaratum, A. coelebs, A. dissimile, A. dubitatum, A. fuscum, A. geayi, A. goeldii, A. humerale, A. incisum, A. latepunctatum, A. longirostre, A. naponense, A. nodosum, A. oblongoguttatum, A. ovale, A. pacae, A. parkeri, A. parvum, A. pictum, A. pseudoconcolor, A. romitii, A. rotundatum, A. scalpturatum, A. sculptum, A. tigrinum, A. triste, A. varium e A. yucumense. It will be still observed in the present study the geographical distribution, hosts and medical-veterinary importance of the nymph stage for each studied species. To this, nymphs of Amblyomma spp. at Brazil, tumbled with the generic identification of Amblyomma sp. in Brazilian zoological collections will be identified to species level of the 11 collections located in the five geopolitical regions of the country. Through these identifications, geographic distribution maps will be constructed covering all species of Amblyomma Brazilian fauna, in order to better understand the ecology of ticks of this genus and in the future mount solid strategies of tick control, thus helping in lowering agents transmitted by ticks to humans in the national territory.
