Abstract

The primary objective of this project is to realize an analysis of Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo's work, Idea del tempio della pittura, published in 1590, a work of acute importance to the artistic historiography of the end of the sixteenth century in Italy. Part of a group of texts and traits about art written especially after his blindness in the 1570's, the Idea del tempio della pittura presents a broad diversity of influences: apart from involving theoretical precepts of the Humanism, it also puts together the Humoral Medicine, the Astrology, the magic, the Psychology, the Physics of the elements and the Physiognomy, sometimes resulting in a quite a lot complex line of thought, frequently considered by its criticism as theoretically heteroclite and not much cohesive. The Idea was associated to the ecletism and criticized as a defender of ideas against the rationalists paradigms of the so-called high renaissance. In this way, the most part of the studies about the Idea del tempio privileged its interesting schematic plan and its use of the temple of painting's metaphor. Less perceptible remains in this critical tradition the frame precisely conceptual of the work, all the more because this is inseparable from the metaphor of the system of the temple itself. In general, studies approaching the Idea in a monographic way, analyzing its artistic conceptions, its schematic and theoretical plan - important to understand the Italian art in the moment of Spanish hegemony over the peninsula - are scarce, and inexistent in the Brazilian scenario, whence the interesting in a profound research about this work. The research ought to result in a master dissertation that will offer in addition a commented translation of the text. (AU)
