Abstract

The landfill is the most economically viable solution to give the correct destination for solid waste to prevent environmental damage. The selection of a suitable area for installation is a complex process involving multidisciplinary knowledge and dependent on several criteria and regulations. In this context, the Geographic Information System (GIS) has fundamental role both in the planning process, as in the operation of a landfill, which are highly dependent on spatial data. This research aims to select appropriate areas for the installation of a landfill in the city of São José dos Campos - SP from the joint analysis of different criteria based on environmental, operational and socioeconomic aspects. To this aim, is proposed the use of GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. The definition of the criteria must be performed in order to consider the local reality and the available data. Thus, from the database, and the criteria adopted, thematic maps with constraints can be developed and integrated to determine appropriate areas for the installation of landfill. Moreover, it is proposed to generate a use and land cover map from Landsat satellite image classification, and then used as a thematic map.
