Abstract This master's research aims to analyze the novel Herzog, by Saul Bellow (1915-2005), especially with regard to the Jewish aspects of the work over the protagonist and the plot. Therefore, the research will look at the construction of the character made by the author in the sense of his personality and worldview, mapping references and issues raised by him in the course of the novel. In this sense, both reflections emerge on the Jewish identity of the character as about the structure of this novel, which seems grounded, at least in part, in the tradition of Yiddish literature. Herzog, therefore, becomes a paradigmatic novel for the understanding of the Jewish confrontations with modernity, to put up against American individualism through the Jewish perspective. Another key aspect of the research is the analysis of Herzog in the context of other works of Saul Bellow, situating the novel in the trajectory of the author and at the same time, it identifies characteristics that permeate the entire production of the author, reinforcing and emphasizing certain elements and anticipating ideas that would be explored in the following publications.
